E.M. Carroll is a prolific, acclaimed webcomic and print comic artist who writes and draws sensational, unsettling Gothic horror, including the fairy-tale-themed Through the Woods (2015), the queer vampiric sort-of-love-story When I Arrived at the Castle (2019), and the Bluebeard-esque A Guest in the House (2023). Carroll’s art is fascinated with body horror; in their work, the body is a haunted house you can’t leave, where there could be a jump-scare at any moment.

This Halloween talk by Erik Kvistad investigates the thrilling and skin-crawling possibilities of the body in Carroll’s work.

Erika Kvistad is a literature and media scholar who works on horror, romance, and the internet, and teaches at the University of South-Eastern Norway.
